Curtis Schickner

“My internship provided me with the experience and knowledge necessary to become successful in the business world. The hands-on work that I completed in the school’s budget under the guidance of the University CFO was unparalleled to anything I had learned before.”

Major: Financial Economics

Internship Site: UMBC, Financial Services

Location: Baltimore, Maryland

Title: Finance Intern

Position Description: This summer I had the opportunity to work in conjunction with the University Chief Financial Officer, Lynne Schaefer, as I learned university finances, accounting, and budgetary practices. I worked throughout the summer reconciling government subsidized student loans, preparing the fiscal year 2011 budget, and creating a presentation of the university’s financial statements.

What are the benefits of choosing to spend your summer participating in an internship, co-op, service-learning or research experience?

Participating in a summer internship has given me the opportunity to learn and implement practices and techniques that were taught during the school year in my relevant courses. Summer internships also offer avenues of learning and experience that cannot be taught in the classroom or read in a textbook. I feel better prepared for the workforce and my future endeavors because of my summer internship.
