Shriver Living Learning Center

The Shriver Living Learning Center in Erickson Hall welcomes students from all years and all majors who are interested in community service, service-learning, development of leadership skills, and civic engagement. Together, students plan and organize service events and participate as tutors and mentors; there are opportunities for scholarships, leadership roles and conference presentations as well. In the Fall semester, students complete a one-credit class as a group. In the Spring, students take an upper-level, three-credit course from a list of approved courses including English, American Studies, Education, Sociology, Honors and other disciplines. This program has been successful and fun for students of all ages, majors and backgrounds (including Information Science and Biology)!

What is the SLLC? The Shriver Living Learning Center is a social and active living community in Erickson Hall. Each year, 29 students are selected to live together where they plan fun activities and service events. The purpose of the SLLC is to encourage service and engagement within the UMBC campus community.

Who lives there? The SLLC hosts undergraduate students of all years and disciplines who want to be engaged in the campus community. Throughout the year, they will improve the UMBC community and the Greater Baltimore area through various service activities.

These students are interested in:

  • Community service
  • Service-learning
  • Development of leadership skills
  • Civic engagement

Why should I apply?

  • The SLLC is a close-knit community on campus that is supportive and fun.
  • SLLC students are engaged and connected to the UMBC campus, faculty and staff.
  • SLLC students earn credits each semester for their service through Prac.
  • There are unique opportunities for conference presentations, leadership roles and scholarships (France and Merrick).
  • SLLC students are familiarized with Baltimore City through service projects.

Earn credit with the SLLC: Students in the SLLC attend a class together in the Fall focused on team-building and civic engagement; students complete a one-credit practicum class as a group. For the service completed during each semester, students receive a zero-credit Practicum notation on their transcript to reflect their engagement in the community (Prac). In the Spring, students take an upper-level, three-credit course from a list of approved courses including English, Honors, American Studies, Education, Sociology, and other disciplines.
